Make square graph paper
Choose a grid you can measure, not just a background that looks like graph paper.

Try a clear starting point.
A five-millimetre grid with a heavier line every five cells gives you a repeated small unit and larger visual groups.

What you can adjust
Grid spacing is 2–25 mm; major interval is 1–20 cells. Line weights are separate physical millimetre controls, even when display units are inches.
Choose Letter, A4, A5 or Half Letter and portrait or landscape. A paper profile being supported does not mean every parameter combination fits it; invalid layouts stop export.
What this tool does not promise
Measure several cells after printing at actual size. Do not use fit-to-page for a measured grid.

Before printing
Inspect every output page, including answer pages where supplied. Use actual size for measured grids or objects, and measure the reference where present. The PDF cannot select your printer settings.
