Read cut, fold and joining marks
Construction instructions should explain which marks change the shape and which only guide assembly. Read the whole packet before cutting away a piece you need to keep.
The short answer
Print one complete set of pieces, cut on the marks supplied by that particular file, and dry-fold before using adhesive. A fold line, score line and cutting line serve different jobs; inspect the resource instructions rather than guessing from a preview.
Identify the legend
Solid outlines commonly mark cuts and dashed lines commonly mark folds in these resources, but use the legend and instructions of the selected file. Do not interpret every dark line as a cut. Internal illustration details may be drawing marks rather than tool paths.
Separate pieces before assembly
Keep matching pieces together and label the reverse in pencil when necessary. A packet may have an outer layer, inset, base, sleeve or joining strip on a later page. Compare the piece list and page count before discarding scraps.
Make folds deliberately
Crease on the intended line. Where scoring is suggested, use an appropriate blunt tool and surface; scoring means guiding a fold, not slicing through the material. Test the method on scrap because paper thickness and coating affect how it bends.
Dry-fit before adhesive
Bring the pieces together without glue first. Check which surfaces face outward, where the opening remains, and whether a tab reaches its joining zone. Mark a confusing join rather than forcing a misaligned piece. Assemble one trial before a batch.
Keep the use proportionate
Paper models and decorations are not automatically suitable for food contact, protective packaging, open flames or load bearing. Scissors, blades, small parts and hanging cords require appropriate supervision and setup. Use the task-specific cautions, not a blanket assumption that every paper project is harmless.
Before you make a batch
- Every required piece and instruction page is present.
- The trial piece folds where expected before gluing.
- The cutting tool and working surface suit the material.
