- The observation record is the needed starting page. Record what you can observe: outline, edge, veins and size.
- Add the comparison sheet only when you have two observations to compare. A follow-up page is optional; these forms do not identify species.

Your project, step by step
- Start with the observation record in your printer paper size. Add the comparison sheet only if you have two observations to compare; read each page's prompts before printing.
- Record the outline, edge, veins and size you can observe, using the ruler where you record a measurement. Keep the observations distinguishable so you can refer back to each one.
- Use the comparison sheet to record similarities and differences. Add the question-and-follow-up page if an observation suggests something to check later. The forms do not identify species.
Printing notes
Use the supplied US Letter or A4 files and matching printer settings. Choose paper you can write on clearly, and carry a pencil and a firm writing surface if you plan to record outdoors.
Make it yours
Add your own descriptions, sketches and measurements. Keep an unknown feature as a question instead of turning it into an identification claim.
